Play of the Day: HEAVEN SENT

HEAVEN SENT
by Bambi Everson

HEAVEN SENT is a play that takes audiences on a roller coaster ride of emotions, blending humor, absurdity, and profound reflections on life and death, presenting a unique and slightly curdled guardian angel story.

The play revolves around three characters: Catherine, a young woman in her 20s, is an innocent, naive, and eager angel in training; Doug, a man in his 30s, is a self-sabotaging recluse who has lost someone very dear to him and is consumed with guilt; and Godfrey, a character of non-specific ethnicity, age, or gender, who is an overworked and underpaid middle manager, and might also be God.

HEAVEN SENT is set in the present, with scenes alternating between Heaven and New York City. Catherine is tasked with helping Doug regain his confidence and break free from his self-destructive cycle. Her interactions with Doug are filled with both humor and tension. She tries to help him in various ways, but he initially resists her efforts.

Unbeknowst to Doug, Catherine naively decides to solve his financial problems by becoming a sex worker. This decision leads to a series of unintended and absurd consequences. Catherine’s actions, while well-intentioned, are seen as breaking the rules of Heaven. This punishment prompts Doug to want to confront Godfrey, demanding justice for her.

HEAVEN SENT will be released in paperback later this year. It is available for licensing directly from the author. Send us an email if you’d like to do a production. It is a play that masterfully combines humor, absurdity, and deep reflections on life, death, and the afterlife. It’s a story that will leave audiences pondering long after the curtain falls.
