A BIRTHDAY CAROL
by Bambi Everson
In A BIRTHDAY CAROL, we meet a woman in her 50s who has grown to despise anything celebratory due to her disappointing experiences. The play opens with Carol, who is approaching yet another birthday, determined to sleep through it. However, her plans are disrupted by the arrival of her best friend, Mark, and a young girl who serves as a spirit guide. The play cleverly uses the format of Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” as its basis, taking Carol on a journey through her past, present, and future.
Carol’s relationship with her mother, who suffers from dementia, is a significantly poignant aspect of the play. Her mother’s forgetfulness about Carol’s birthday underscores Carol’s complex feelings about her family, aging, and celebrations.
A BIRTHDAY CAROL is filled with sardonic humor, particularly in the scenes depicting Carol’s childhood birthday parties. Her father had a habit of showing traumatizing films at these parties, including a Shirley Temple film in which a mother dies in a car accident while carrying a birthday cake. These scenes are reenacted by Mark and the spirit guide using hand puppets, adding a layer of surreal humor to Carol’s already ridiculous and awful childhood memories.
It is a wry and rueful exploration of life, aging, and the passage of time – a play that’s perfect for an evening of introspective and humorously thought-provoking theater.
A BIRTHDAY CAROL will be released in paperback later this years. It is available for licensing directly from the author. Send us an email if you’d like to do a production.
