THE THIN MAN IN THE CHERRY ORCHARD
by Bambi Everson
Welcome, theater enthusiasts, to a new feature for the month of June, 2023. “30 Days of Plays!” Why not?
Seems appropriate for the first featured Play of the Day in the series to be my biggest seller to date. Today, we have an intriguing mashup that combines Dashiell Hammett’s clever detective duo with the melancholic world of Chekhov. Introducing “The Thin Man in the Cherry Orchard!”
Set in a Russian suburb during the 1940s, this charmingly sardonic play follows the adventures of Nick and Nora Charles, renowned American sleuths, as they meet their stoic Russian cousins. Mme. Ranevskaya, the elegant yet impoverished matriarch, who holds onto shreds of dignity, while her daughters, Anya and Varya, navigate their own anxieties and desires. Nick and Nora, the sophisticated couple we know and love, bring their witty banter and undeniable chemistry to this unlikely encounter.
As the plot thickens, a murder shakes the Cherry Orchard, and with vodka flowing aplenty, Nick takes on the challenge of solving the crime before the liquor runs dry. Inspector Ivanovich, an ineffective and arrogant law enforcement officer, adds an extra dash of comedy to the mix. Can Nick outsmart the inspector and uncover the truth?
If you’re a fan of mystery, comedy, and the undying love between Nick and Nora, you won’t want to miss this enchanting tale. Prepare to be immersed in the humor and intrigue as two literary worlds collide in the unlikeliest of ways.
“The Thin Man in the Cherry Orchard” is a must-read for theater lovers and fans of classic detective stories. brings together the glamour of the “Thin Man” series with the bleak yet captivating atmosphere of Chekhov’s iconic play.
