OVER FOR DINNER
by Bambi Everson
OVER FOR DINNER is a jet black comedy that lampoons the dynamics of family relationships and the pressures of societal expectations. A must-see for anyone who enjoys a sharp twist with their humor.
It is a short, 10-minute play set in the present day, and taking place in a dining room in Long Island. The characters include a long-married couple in their 50s, their son Dick, and his date, Jess. The plot revolves around Jess meeting Dick’s parents for the first time, which leads to surprising consequences.
The Bivelli home, where the play is set, is described as an upper-middle-class Italian Catholic family’s residence with gaudy and rather bad taste décor. The dining room has four ornate wooden chairs with plastic-coated cushions, and the table is set for company with their finest vinyl flowered tablecloth. As the dinner progresses, the conversation becomes increasingly uncomfortable, with the parents making inappropriate comments, and Jess trying to maintain her composure.
OVER FOR DINNER will be released in paperback later this year, as part of a collection of short plays. It is available for licensing directly from the author. Send us an email if you’d like to do a production.
