Play of the Day: MEETING MERVYN

MEETING MERVYNA middle-aged mom meets a gruff but lovable curmudgeon, and a special friendship develops. One act, approx. 10 minutes.
by Bambi Everson

In the bustling streets of New York City, a chance encounter unfolds into a heartwarming tale of friendship, life, and remembrance in the 10-minute short, MEETING MERVYN.

The story begins at the corner of 96th Street and Columbus Ave., where Abigail notices Mervyn, an old man, struggling to cross the street. Despite his initial resistance, a special bond develops between them as they share stories, advice, and moments of reflection. Their conversation is a poignant reminder of the beauty of human connection and the importance of slowing down to appreciate the present.

Mervyn, a man of 93 years, shares tales of his past, his travels, and his beloved late wife. Abigail, in turn, opens up about her worries for her autistic adult daughter. Their exchange is filled with humor, wisdom, and a shared understanding of life’s complexities. It’s a reminder that every encounter has the potential to change our lives, even if it lasts for just a few minutes.

MEETING MERVYN will be released in paperback later this year, as part of a collection of short plays. It is available for licensing directly from the author. Send us an email if you’d like to do a production.
